A lucky young sailor from Hurstbourne Tarrant near Newbury has won an amazing prize. A brand new dinghy and one days' personal sailing coaching from Sydney Olympic gold medallist Iain Percy was won by Toby Holloway. Toby Holloway aged 12, received his prize at the Volvo Musto Optimist End of Season Championships held at Draycote Water Sailing Club near Rugby. The Optimist is the most popular junior dinghy in the world, and the boat most of Britain's top sailors started sailing. "I was really shocked to win - Mum and Dad weren't in the room when my entry was pulled out and didn't believe me at first when I ran to tell them," said Toby.  "I don't usually win competitions and I'm really happy to win this  one."

Squad selection procedures for 2003 Squad selection procedures for 2002 season (2003 squad)

The committee is considering making changes to the squad selection method for next year. The objective will be to encourage older sailors to remain in the class and thus the number of juniors may be reduced in the national squad. More details will be made available shortly.

WANTED - a willing volunteer to take over Op:Shop. Contact: Ruth Tayler for details.
Safety fleet help needed! We lost a large number of Safety Fleet helpers at the end of last season as their children moved to bigger boats and I am urgently looking for parents with the following:

RIBs (>4.3 metres in length) with reliable engines; Drivers with Powerboat 1&2 qualifications; Rescue crews to person(!!) the RIBs.

The Oppie Safety Fleet provides the necessary safety cover at the Inland Champs, the Nationals and at the End-of-Season Championship.  We typically field nearly 30 RIBs to support our children.

This is a fulfilling function and gives you the ability to be on the water instead of sitting in a nice warm Clubhouse reading a newspaper and drinking tea!

IOCA pays certain expenses to cover the running and towing costs of the RIB.

Parents interesting in helping should contact me at: eMail bryan.visser@eggconnect.net Home phone 01865 891657 Mobile 07880 743531
