European Team Warm Up in Slovenia

As part of the warm up to the 1997 Optimist European Championships the British Team took part in the Piran International Open Meeting in Slovenia, 27-29 June 1997. The conditions throughout the event were typically of the Adriatic being very hot and the winds light and shifty. The Open Meeting was sailed in the same waters as the Championships.

The first day started well with Jonathan Marshall winning the first race and Nicholas Asher coming third in the second. On the second day the fourth race proved very testing with a windshift of 180 degrees during the race. James Spencer put in the best British performance with a ninth place. The remaining two races were sailed on the third day giving the British Team an ideal opportunity to sail against international competition prior to the European Championships.

The overall results put the British team into first place giving them the prize of a Morgan One Design Optimist (Hull only!.....Ed). The team followed this event with training by the National Coach, Peter Martin, prior to the European Championships 5-11 July.

Results: 1st Igor Buchberger (ITA), 2nd Karlo Krpeljevic (CRO), 3rd Karlo Hmeljak (SLO). British Results: 6th Nick Asher, 14th Jonathan Marshall, 20th James Spencer, 25th Eddie Huntley, 26th Gemma Silk, 34th Shona Brooks, 37th Edward Dashfield, 40th Karen Greenland.
