Flanders Youth Regatta - 2001After the protests had been heard at Flanders Youth Regatta for the Optimist Fleet of 143 sailors in Nieuwpoort, Belgium British sailor Tom Mallindine moved up to a podium position of 3rd overall. Hannah Mills was also on the podium for the girls finishing 6th overall and second girl. Other notable results included Oliver Dix at 9th, Ed Powys at 12th and Richard Mason at 18th. Mallindine, who is coming back to form following a broken arm during the February half term, now moves on to a harder battle at the Optimist World Championships. He along with fellow British sailors David Evans, Luke Patience, Josh Metcalfe and Tom Smedley leave this coming weekend for the 2001 Optimist World Championships in China. This is the toughest event in the Optimist calendar with the top 5 sailors from as many as 40 nations competing. Mallindine is attending his 3rd Worlds and will be hoping to improve on his 30th overall at the event last year. For Smedley it is his second time representing GBR at the Optimist Worlds. Whilst for Evans and Patience, who had top results at the European Championships last year, and for Metcalfe it is their first time at the Optimist Worlds. Overall (subject to protest) ; 1.
